Discussion:
[Tikiwiki-devel] Idea of a customized powered-by link in bottom bar

You realize what's happening, right? Starting (I think in 1.9.10), the
default bottom bar says Powered by Tikiwiki with a link to tw.o.
Apparently folks are clicking that link, thinking that is who runs the
website.

Maybe we could/should have a custom landing page for folks clicking a
POWERED BY link. It could take them to a list of reasons why *they*
should use Tikiwiki....

Rick: I like the idea. Can you take the lead?

Is it possible that the powered by link links to a "built-in" hard-coded
page introducing TikiWiki such that it only displays content as if it
were a wiki page within whatever theme the site is using and using its
base url?

Powered by Tikiwiki ->
http://my.domain.com/tiki-index.php?page=Powered+by+Tikiwiki

Everyone running Tiki sees the same content. Probably should make it
optional if that page is an "active" page or not, but I think it would
address both sides of the issue.

Mike.

Maybe we don't. Just throwing an idea out there that would address people clicking on the powered by logo and going to tw.o website and mistakenly believing that's who ran the site they were visiting. By hard-coding that page in the distro, it gets the Tiki message across but keeps the URL the same so you're still viewing the same site. Presumably the page would link out to tw.o.

I'm not sold on it entirely myself, but it's just an idea that addresses site owner confusion and touting Tiki.

Mike.

Hi!

Ok, I understand now. This could be a plan B. By default, we prefer to
have incoming links.

Also, we can keep the incoming page up to date.

Actually, I was thinking of the exact opposite... let the referring domain be included in the reference link. So that all the Powered By Tiki links would point to:

http://www.tikiwiki.org/PoweredBy?refer=www.mydomain.com

Then (somehow, I'm not really sure how), we dynamically pull the "refer" information and present a pseudo-customized page:

----

Hello! The website you were viewing (www.mydomain.com) uses Tiki... etc. You can use Tiki to power *your* website, too!

If you are the owner or webmaster of www.mydomain.com, why not join the Tiki community....

---

Does that make sense to anyone?

i was just thinking, doesn't this approach disclose information to the

ah...

Well, in our logs, we (TikiWiki.org) already know where people are
coming from. And the person clicking the link obviously knows where
they are coming from.

Besides, this would be totally optional. People can remove the
powered-by notice in the admin panel.

In Rick's proposal,
http://www.tikiwiki.org/PoweredBy?refer=www.mydomain.com

It's just to make a customized experience.

They can remove the notice? Must be a 3.0 thing. In 2.* it's hardcoded
in the footer.

The referer info is already known to the tw.o web server, unless the web
client is hiding it. Putting it in the URL just makes it obvious that
it's being provided.

And if the tw.o page is oriented toward explaining tw.o to random users,
it should not be the tw.o home page but rather one which at the top
explains that "This is an information page about the TikiWiki software.
If you're looking for information about the site which you were on, press
your web browser's BACK button or click HERE (link to referer)."

IMHO, I don't think it is an issue. Don't the tw.o server logs already
gather this info when folks click the "Check for Updates" button on the
Admin: General panel?
